STGMS uses the InstallAnywhere deployment system from ZeroG Software, the same software used by STScI's StarView and APT tools.
The STGMS installation is normally done using a small Java applet provided by ZeroG that runs in a browser environment. This applet automatically downloads and installs STGMS on your system. If you prefer you can download and execute the install kit separately. See the instructions on the STGMS Installer Page.
The Windows installer includes a Java environment to assure correct operation with STGMS. The install kit looks for an Acrobat Reader, and will attempt to install one if it cannot find one on the system. STGMS launches the user's system-defined applications to read HTML and PDF documents. STScI tests STGMS with Firefox and Internet Explorer, but STGMS is also known to work with other browsers.
STScI does not support Windows 95, 98, or Me, and does not yet support Windows Vista.
Windows XP Home is a consumer-grade operating system with only rudimentary access controls, and we discourage its use. Support for Vista may be available in the future.
The Mac OS X installer depends on Apple's preinstalled Java 1.5 environment. Other versions of Java are not supported. STGMS launches the user's system-defined applications to read HTML and PDF documents.
If you are using Stuffit version 10, please read this special note.
The Solaris installer includes a Java environment to assure correct operation with STGMS. STGMS requires Mozilla and Acrobat reader. STScI tests STGMS with Sun Mozilla 1.7.
The Linux installer includes a Java environment to assure correct operation with STGMS. Seamonkey (formally known as Mozilla) and Acrobat Reader 7.0 are required. STScI tests STGMS with the current version of Seamonkey.
Use of STGMS with 64-bit Linux is not currently supported, but may work if 32-bit compatibility libraries are installed.
Some STGMS users on Solaris and Linux systems may want to install the STGMS system on shared, read-only file systems and make that copy available to their users.
The InstallAnywhere deployment system does not support shared installation, and STGMS is updated several times a year as we add features and improve our services.
System administrators who wish to install STGMS in a shared area should run the installer from an account with write-access to the shared file system and then see these notes on shared installations.
